How to retrofit a window: A guide to adding corner windows to your living room

Retrofitting a window usually means working with an opening that already exists. The old window comes out, the condition of the frame and rough opening is evaluated, and a new unit is installed using an approach appropriate for the existing construction.

But renovation plans do not always fit neatly inside an existing opening.

If you want more glass, a wider view, or a window that wraps around the corner of a living room, the project starts to involve the architecture and structure of the house itself. Instead of simply replacing a window, you may be changing framing that helps support the building.

That distinction matters.

A conventional retrofit window installation can often preserve much of the existing opening. A corner window retrofit may require exposing structural framing, evaluating existing headers, temporarily supporting loads, removing the original framed corner, installing a structural system, and carefully integrating the new opening with the building envelope.
