To measure for a conventional retrofit window, record the opening’s width, height, depth, and diagonal dimensions. Measure the width and height in three places, and use the smallest measurements as the preliminary opening dimensions. You should also check whether the sill and jambs are level, plumb, and square.

For a retrofit corner window, those dimensions are only the starting point.

In the window industry, a retrofit window most commonly refers to a replacement or insert window installed within an existing window condition. Homeowners also use “retrofit” more broadly when researching window projects in existing homes.

Step 1: Identify the surface you are measuring

Before recording a number, identify what the tape measure is touching.

Possible measurements include:

  • Visible glass
  • Operable sash
  • Existing window frame
  • Clear opening
  • Rough opening

These dimensions are not interchangeable.

The visible glass measurement describes only the area you can see through. It does not account for the sash, frame, stops, or installation space.

For preliminary insert-replacement sizing, measurements are commonly taken between the appropriate existing jamb surfaces. For full-frame replacement, the rough opening may need to be confirmed after trim and the existing frame are removed.

Label every measurement so the project team knows exactly what it represents.

Step 2: Measure the width in three places

Measure the opening horizontally in three locations:

  • Near the top
  • Across the middle
  • Near the bottom

Record all three measurements rather than assuming the opening is consistent from top to bottom.

Pay close attention to sloped sills, projecting tracks, removable stops, interior trim, and exterior cladding. These components can obscure the true opening or make one measurement appear larger than the usable space.

Step 4: Measure the opening depth

Measure the available jamb or wall depth at several locations.

Depth matters because the proposed window must integrate with the full wall assembly, not just the visible opening. Existing stops, tracks, trim, plaster returns, siding, stucco, masonry, and interior finishes can all affect the usable depth.

A shallow or irregular wall condition may affect:

Step 5: Check whether the opening is square

Measure diagonally from:

Diagonal measurements should not be used as the only test. A bowed jamb or uneven sill can still create installation problems even when the diagonals appear similar.

Acceptable tolerances depend on the window manufacturer, installation method, and project specifications. Do not assume that one tolerance applies to every system.

Step 6: Check level and plumb

Use a level to check:

  • The sill
  • The head
  • The left jamb
  • The right jamb

These terms describe different conditions:

  • Level means horizontally straight.
  • Plumb means vertically straight.
  • Square means the corners form the intended angles.

An opening may have acceptable width and height dimensions while still being out of level, plumb, or square.

  • The complete interior elevation
